1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability. These people should be given the same rights opportunities as non-disabled people.
Easy Read allows individuals to participate in society, to be able to make their own decisions and to understand life a bit better.
Easy Read uses plain and simplified language, broken down into specific steps and accompanied by photo symbols which allow people to understand and retain the information.
LWA has been raising awareness and campaigning for companies to provide Easy Read. This has been a great success with some companies; however, others have been reluctant to understand the importance of Easy Read. We cannot see why Easy Read cannot be mainstreamed into service operations in the same way as Braille and Audio currently are.
In September we will be launching an Easy Read volunteer project which will enable us to keep striving to make information accessible to people with learning difficulties.
